Election Live Updates: Harris Campaigns in North Carolina While Trump Visits Arizona

Harris Campaign Targets Male Voters with NFL Ads: A Bold Move in Swing States

As the race for the presidency heats up, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign is taking an unconventional approach to reach male voters—by hitting the football field. With a hefty six-figure investment, the Harris campaign is launching flyover advertisements at four key NFL games this Sunday, strategically targeting swing states where football fans are likely to be tuning in. The goal? To sway undecided male voters who may not be engaged with traditional political messaging.

The four games selected for this ambitious outreach are set in battleground states: the Green Bay Packers vs. the Arizona Cardinals in Wisconsin, the Las Vegas Raiders vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers in Nevada, the Carolina Panthers vs. the Atlanta Falcons in North Carolina, and the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Cleveland Browns in Pennsylvania. Notably, these matchups represent six of the seven main presidential battlegrounds, making them prime locations for the campaign’s message.

In a creative twist, fans in Las Vegas will witness skytyping planes writing a simple yet impactful message: “Vote Kamala.” Meanwhile, at the other venues, a plane will fly a banner with a more pointed plea: “Sack Trump’s Project 2025! Vote Kamala!” In Philadelphia, the message will even include a nod to the local team with a spirited “Go Birds!”

Abhi Rahman, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, explained the rationale behind this unique strategy. “Our goal is to meet people where they are,” he said, emphasizing that many undecided voters, particularly men, are not immersed in the world of politics. “They don’t like to read political publications,” he added, highlighting the need for a fresh approach to engage this demographic.

The NFL audience skews heavily male, making it a fertile ground for the Harris campaign to plant its seeds. With polling indicating a significant gender gap in the upcoming election—women favoring Harris while men lean towards former President Donald Trump—the campaign is eager to bridge that divide. Rahman noted that the skytyping and banners might resonate more effectively than traditional television ads, which many viewers are beginning to tune out.

The campaign’s efforts come on the heels of a media blitz by Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. They have been making appearances on various platforms, from sit-down interviews to popular podcasts, aiming to connect with voters who may need a little extra encouragement to head to the polls. Walz, a former high school football coach, is particularly focused on appealing to younger male voters, a group that surveys show has increasingly leaned toward Trump.

In a bid to further engage this demographic, the campaign recently launched a “Hunters and Anglers for Harris-Walz” coalition, showcasing their commitment to outdoor activities that resonate with many men. Additionally, former President Barack Obama has been vocal in urging Black men to support Harris, emphasizing the importance of voting for a woman in this election.

As the Harris campaign continues to navigate the complex landscape of voter outreach, the NFL flyover ads represent a bold and innovative strategy to capture the attention of hard-to-reach voters. With the election drawing closer, it will be fascinating to see if this unconventional approach pays off in the polls. Whether it’s through skywriting or sports, the campaign is determined to make its mark and rally support for Harris in the upcoming presidential race.
