US Presidential Elections 2024: Donald Trump Claims He’d Dismiss Special Counsel Jack Smith Instantly

Trump Vows to Fire Special Counsel Jack Smith if Elected President Again

In a bold declaration on Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that he would swiftly fire Jack Smith, the special counsel overseeing two federal cases against him, if he secures victory in the upcoming November election. This statement has ignited a flurry of reactions, particularly from the campaign of his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, who accused Trump of believing he is “above the law.”

Trump is currently embroiled in legal troubles, facing sentencing for separate charges related to hush money payments. Smith’s investigations focus on allegations that Trump conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden. During an interview with conservative podcast host Hugh Hewitt, Trump made it clear that he would take immediate action against Smith, stating, “It’s so easy. I would fire him within two seconds.”

The former president’s comments come as his legal team has filed a motion to dismiss the election subversion case, claiming that Smith was unlawfully appointed. This argument echoes a previous success in another case against Trump, where a judge dismissed charges related to mishandling classified documents. That ruling came from District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, whom Trump described as a “brave, brilliant judge.”

While Trump’s remarks have drawn criticism, they also raise questions about the limits of presidential power. Although a sitting president cannot directly dismiss a special counsel, a Trump administration could appoint a new attorney general who might take such action. This potential shift in leadership could also lead to the dismissal of federal cases against Trump.

Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Harris campaign, expressed concern over Trump’s intentions, suggesting that his comments align with warnings from former Chief of Staff John Kelly about Trump’s desire for unchecked power. “A second Trump term, where a more unstable and unhinged Trump has essentially no guardrails and is surrounded by loyalists who will enable his worst instincts, is guaranteed to be more dangerous,” Moussa stated.

As Trump navigates his legal challenges, he faces serious accusations, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding related to the January 6 Capitol attack. Additionally, he has been convicted in New York on multiple counts of falsifying business records tied to hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels and faces racketeering charges in Georgia.

With the election drawing closer, Trump’s legal battles and his controversial statements continue to shape the political landscape. As he rallies support for his campaign, the implications of his promises to fire Smith and potentially reshape the Justice Department loom large over the upcoming election.
