Pro-Palestinian Protesters Rally in Portland Ahead of One-Year Mark of Hamas Attack on Israel
PORTLAND (WGME) – On a chilly Saturday afternoon, Monument Square Park in Portland became a vibrant hub of activism as pro-Palestinian protesters gathered to voice their concerns just two days shy of the one-year anniversary of the devastating Hamas attack on Israel. This tragic event, which left approximately 1,200 people dead and 250 taken hostage, has since escalated into a broader conflict that has claimed the lives of over 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as demonstrators called for a halt to U.S. military support for Israel. Among them was Mary Beth Sullivan, who expressed her deep sorrow over the ongoing violence. “I am devastated by watching the destruction that’s happening in Gaza and now Lebanon, Syria. It’s chaos, utter chaos. And we’re paying for it. It’s my tax dollars that are paying for the weapons that are killing the children and women in Gaza and beyond,” she lamented, highlighting the personal connection many feel to the conflict.
As the November elections loom just a month away, the protesters were eager to discuss how U.S. involvement in the Middle East is influencing their voting decisions. Nigel Calder, another passionate protester, shared his thoughts on Maine’s unique ranked-choice voting system. “We are very lucky in Maine because we have ranked choice voting. So, we can vote, for example, for Jill Stein who is very opposed to conflict in Palestine and still vote for Kamala Harris without compromising that vote for Kamala Harris. But I’ll actually be voting for Jill Stein first and Kamala Harris second,” he explained, illustrating how voters can express their values while still considering broader electoral strategies.
The Portland rally was part of a larger global movement, with thousands of individuals gathering in cities around the world to show solidarity with Palestine. This widespread participation underscores the growing urgency and passion surrounding the issue, as people from diverse backgrounds come together to advocate for peace and justice.
As the sun began to set over the park, the chants and signs reflected a collective hope for change. The protesters, while deeply concerned about the current state of affairs, remained committed to raising awareness and pushing for a shift in U.S. foreign policy. Their voices echoed not just in Portland, but across the globe, reminding us all of the interconnectedness of our world and the power of grassroots activism.
In a time of division and conflict, events like these serve as a reminder of the importance of dialogue, understanding, and the pursuit of peace. As the anniversary of the Hamas attack approaches, the call for justice and accountability continues to resonate, urging us all to reflect on our role in shaping a more peaceful future.
