Congress Prepares for Assembly Elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Aims for Unity After Haryana Setback
As the Congress party gears up for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, it is making a concerted effort to present a united front among its allies in the INDIA bloc. This renewed focus on unity comes on the heels of a disappointing performance in Haryana, where internal factionalism was cited as a significant factor in the party’s unexpected losses.
Maharashtra is set to vote for its 288 assembly seats on November 20, while Haryana will hold elections for its 81 seats in two phases on November 13 and November 20. The results for both states will be announced on November 23, according to the Election Commission of India.
In a bid to avoid a repeat of the Haryana debacle, Congress leadership has issued a stern warning to state leaders against public dissent, particularly regarding party colleagues and alliance partners. This directive comes directly from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi, who emphasized the importance of maintaining party discipline during an internal meeting.
Seat-Sharing Talks and Election Dynamics
The Congress party is currently engaged in seat-sharing discussions with its allies in the INDIA bloc, with reports indicating that approximately 80% of the seats have already been finalized. The Maharashtra elections are expected to be a fierce contest between the ruling Mahayuti Alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress.
In the previous assembly elections in 2019, the BJP and an undivided Shiv Sena coalition emerged victorious. However, the MVA is optimistic, having won 31 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra during the recent general elections. The Congress, which currently holds 37 MLAs in the state assembly, is keen to reclaim its position and is reportedly eyeing the chief ministerial post, given its status as the largest opposition party.
Strategic Appointments and Campaign Promises
To bolster its campaign efforts, the Congress has appointed senior observers for various regions in Maharashtra. Notable figures such as Ashok Gehlot and G Parameshwara will oversee the Mumbai and Konkan regions, while Sachin Pilot and Uttam Kumar Reddy will focus on Marathwada. The party is also expected to announce specific guarantees for the state, similar to strategies employed in other regions, to counter the BJP-led alliance.
In Jharkhand, the Congress is banking on its partnership with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which successfully retained power in the last elections. The JMM, part of the INDIA bloc, is preparing to face off against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the BJP and other regional parties.
A Call to Action
As the Congress party readies itself for these critical elections, Kharge has taken the opportunity to criticize the BJP, particularly on issues of inflation and governance. He asserted that the public will prioritize fundamental issues over political diversions, signaling a strategic shift in the party’s campaign messaging.
With the stakes high in both Maharashtra and Jharkhand, the Congress party is determined to learn from past mistakes and present a cohesive and compelling narrative to voters. As the election dates draw closer, all eyes will be on how effectively the party can navigate its internal dynamics and rally its allies for a successful campaign.
