Idaho Capital Sun: 2nd Congressional District Overview

Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District Race Heats Up Ahead of November Election

As the November general election approaches, Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District is shaping up to be a competitive battleground. Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson, who has held the seat since 1999, is facing off against three challengers: Democrat David Roth, Libertarian Todd Corsetti, and Constitution Party candidate Idaho Law – Carta Sierra. With nearly 1 million residents in the district, which includes parts of Ada County and most of Boise, the stakes are high.

Simpson, 73, is seeking re-election for his 14th term in Congress. Historically, he has enjoyed significant support, winning past elections by an average margin of nearly 34 points over his Democratic opponents. However, this year’s race could present new challenges as voters express concerns over pressing issues like the economy, healthcare, and climate change.

Candidates’ Priorities

In a recent survey conducted by the Idaho Capital Sun, all four candidates outlined their top priorities if elected.

Mike Simpson emphasized his commitment to securing the southern border, restoring American energy independence, and reforming the legal immigration process to address labor shortages in agriculture. He criticized the Biden administration’s policies, claiming they jeopardize national security and economic stability.

David Roth, representing the Democratic Party, focused on abortion rights, LGBT rights, and economic issues. He advocates for reinstating protections from Roe v. Wade and believes that individual rights should not vary from state to state.

Todd Corsetti, the Libertarian candidate, called for an end to "forever wars" and emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility. He argues for reducing government size and budget, advocating for personal liberties and privacy rights.

Idaho Law – Carta Sierra, running under the Constitution Party, brought a unique perspective, highlighting environmental concerns related to radioactive fertilizers and advocating for universal healthcare. He aims to address what he describes as the "poisoning of America" through harmful agricultural practices.

Climate Change and Agriculture

With Idaho’s agriculture and energy sectors facing challenges from climate change, candidates shared their views on federal policies to mitigate these issues. Simpson stressed the importance of a balanced approach to energy that includes fossil fuels and nuclear power, while Roth called for increased support for farmers during droughts and funding for wildfire prevention. Corsetti and Law – Carta Sierra focused on pollution and the need for sustainable practices.

Abortion Policies and Rights

Abortion remains a contentious topic, with candidates divided on whether it should be a federal or state issue. Simpson supports state-level legislation, while Roth argues for federal protections. Corsetti believes the federal government should not be involved, and Law – Carta Sierra advocates for universal healthcare as a broader health rights issue.

Bipartisanship and Congressional Functionality

The candidates also addressed the current state of Congress, which has seen a significant drop in the number of laws passed. Simpson highlighted his experience in negotiating bipartisan legislation, while Roth expressed skepticism about reaching agreements in a divided Congress. Corsetti suggested that fewer laws could be beneficial, while Law – Carta Sierra proposed term limits and reforms to improve congressional efficiency.

Economic Concerns

With inflation and the cost of living at the forefront of voters’ minds—74% of Idahoans cite these as their top economic concerns—candidates offered their solutions. Simpson criticized the Biden administration’s economic policies, while Roth pointed to market consolidation as a factor driving up prices. Corsetti blamed inflation on government fiscal policies, advocating for a return to sound money principles. Law – Carta Sierra proposed radical changes to the monetary system to address wealth inequality.

Conclusion

As the election draws near, the candidates in Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District are making their cases to voters, each presenting distinct visions for the future. With a mix of experience and fresh perspectives, the race is poised to reflect the diverse priorities of Idahoans. Voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on these critical issues come November, shaping the direction of their representation in Congress for the next two years.
